Eric and Dee Dee's Honeymoon: Having Pupu in Poipu

Dee Dee and I are exhausted…we’ve actually done a lot on this island…so far Kauai is our favorite island.

We woke up at 8:00am, and took a walk along the paths leading in and out of the Hyatt property. We walked north of the resort and saw some huge waves crash on the coast.

We hung out by the lagoon and read and swam. We brought down to the pool our own rum and fruit punch (Arizona fruit punch tea)…pre-mixed in a Gatoraid bottle. This trick saved us $10 per drink at the Hyatt…and we had a least 2 drinks each.

Dee Dee and I find that after 2-3 hours by the pool and soaking in the seanary, we both get bored. We decided to drive into Brenekees for a snack. I ordered a Pink Panther drink in honor of Dee Dee’s favorite cartoon character. Dee Dee had a lava flow. Brenekees is a great, old school, local hang out to just chill out and watch the day pass at Poipu Beach.

We drove down to the Beach House restaurant at 4:00pm. This place is famous for being right on the water and directly facing west. So, reservations are required weeks in advance to secure a dinner table to watch a glorious sunset at this pricey eater. The key to “breaking” the reservation system is to be at the restaurant by 4:30pm to stand in line to get one of the coveted tables in the bar area..that are given on a first come, first served fashion. Dee Dee and I were there at 4:35…and were 5th in line. When 5:00pm came, we were the first 2 person party to get in so we got a great 2-top table looking out to the horizon.

By far, this was one of the best places I’ve been to…ambiance aside. I had a GREAT watermelon salad with arugula…and a great Ono fish over risotto. The fish was so fresh and so well prepared that all “fishy” tastes were removed, enabling Dee Dee to take a bite of fish to learn how flavorful well-prepared fish can be. Dee Dee had a great pork dish that just melted off the bone it was so tender.

We got to chatting with two couples that were sitting in front of this. The older couple was from Houston, TX and the husband spoke like a wheeler dealer car salesman type..and other couple was a little younger and were from New Orleans, LA. The wife of the LI couple was very chatty and was very excited to hear that Dee Dee and I were on our honeymoon. Her name was Lauren and she kindly offered to take our picture as the orange ball in the sky sank into the water. Apparently, Lauren’s dad is a professional photographer and the creativity rubbed off o her. Lauren offered to take our pictures in several sunset focused locations…and all pics turned out great. Thanks, Lauren, for making the night so fun! After dinner, Dee Dee and drove back to the Hyatt and got an ice cream bar at the ABC store.
