Eric and Dee Dee's Honeymoon: Lahaina

Ugh…the breakfast buffet at the Ritz is $26 each! Luckily, our room package included the breakfast buffet…so we porked out each morning. The food was good, though…but not worth the price of a typical dinner. Also, at the table across from us, there was a young woman wearing very low rise jeans and every time she leaned forward to get something off the table, we got a view of half of her butt crack…nice. Dee Dee actually snapped a few pictures of this…very funny!

We drove down to Lahaina and rented snorkel equipment from West Maui Dive Shop. They charge $15 a week to rent the mask, snorkel and fins. Most hotels charge that rate for an hour. While Dee Dee and I were trying on the fins we spotted a beaver on the street. Dee Dee had her back to the window when a truck pulled up outside the truck. Facing Dee Dee and the dive shop window, I witnessed a heavy set red headed woman got out and lifted up her sun dress with her back to me. She pulled off a wet bathing suit and then jumped pack into the truck revealing a very unkept beaver. The truck drove off…we were stunned. GROSS.

We took the equipment and went down to the Sheraton in Kaanapali to snorkel off of Black Rock. Unfortunately, there were too many people when we arrived at noon. It’s best to snorkel early in the morning around 8:00 or 9:00am before the tourists come out and scare the fish off. We did see some fish, but not as many as we saw in the Carribbean.

We left and drove up to Kapalua Bay…a well known snorkel spot and beach near the Ritz in Kapalua. We dropped our towels down and took a great 1 hr nap.

The highlight of the day was our drive up to Honolua Bay, which is north of Kapalua. Honolua is a surfer’s paradise with the tall waves in the winter months. We turned left on to a dirt road where we saw several surfer’s trucks/cars parked. We parked on the sholder and followed the stream of surfers down a steep path down a side of a cliff that led to a rocky look out point. From this point we saw some AMAZING surfing as surfer road curling waves from several hundred yards out all the way into the beach area. Several friends of the surfers watch from the rocks and cheered their friends on as they road in and pulled a trick. WAY COOL….if you get the chance, GO SEE THIS.

That night we ate at Vino’s in Kapalua. This restaurant won several top Maui restaurant awards so we had high expectations. The restaurant served Spanish tapas (so several small plates) with a Hawaiian twist. We ordered the short ribs, crab cakes and spinach raviolis. Overall, the food was good, but the ambiance was awful. The restaurant is on a golf course and feels like a vast, open club house. The service was OK…we had to repeatedly ask the waiter for water and refills on ice tea…which is not good for paying high $$ .
